Description :
The novel Didi by renowned author Nirupama Devi tells the tale of a capable, self-assured, and industrious woman who, by her own admission, enjoys taking charge of things. Surama is as capable of taking on and carrying out duties with the same credibility as the CEO of a sizable corporation. However, she only has co-wife status with her husband. Divorce was not an option (Didi was published in Bengali in 1915, years before the Hindu Marriage Act of 1955 legalised divorce), so Surama's challenge is to live a happy life within the confines of her unusual situation. Surama makes a concerted effort to despise her husband, which only serves to complicate matters. In actuality, the story has no antagonist. Even Amar is kind and kind, even though he brings a younger woman home as his second wife. The author effectively portrays him as a victim of his surroundings. At the start of the story, the second wife, Charu, is a child-woman who adores her Didi, Surama. The narrative revolves around the friendship between a man's two wives. Didi is a reminder of why society needed to change for women to live their lives with dignity. It is made up of strong subplots, one of which depicts the agonising process by which a young widow sublimates her sexuality and submits herself to God, the only way of living allowed to her by the society of her time.
