Description :
The fifth book by Tagore, Gora (1910), is regarded as his masterpiece. It was a turning point in the history of the Bengali novel because of its epic proportions and wide-ranging depiction of the social, cultural, religious, and political life of the urban middle class Bengal of the nineteenth century. It is thought that Tagore's own journey from rigid Brahmoism and Hinduism to the religion of man, from nationalism to internationalism, and from Hindu revivalism to universal brotherhood, is expressed in the novel. W. W. Pearson translated it into English in 1924. Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941), one of India’s most beloved Renaissance men, helped to establish our country on the literary map of the world in 1913 when his Gitanjanli won the Nobel Prize in literature. He is a poet's poet who has shaped both contemporary Indian literature and the contemporary Indian psyche. With a broad range of talents, he wrote plays, novels, essays, poetry, short stories, paintings, and song compositions. He was dubbed the "Great Sentinel" by Gandhi. He is a living presence due to his widespread recognition as a social, political, religious, and artistic thinker, an innovator in education, and a supporter of the "One World" concept.
